Last chapter: The Sinner and the Showboat - Chapter 9

A Parkbench Altar

The situation Tom found himself in was like nothin’ he had ever known his lifetime. Here he sat in a part of town he'd never dared tread before, sittin' as a comrade, beside this ragged old dirty homeless man named Donny. Donny encompassed everything that Tom had previously despised and scorned. For the first time in his life Tom could see beyond what his eyes perceived. Donny was a man who had once had it all; security, nice job, a wife and the pleasures of success … just like him but Donny lost it all in one split second … now here he was on the streets like a cast-off, abandoned and alone. Why hadn’t Tom realized that street people had hearts and souls and ambitions and dreams just like he had? Tom suddenly felt very small.

Next this hoodlum shows up with the wisdom of a preacher posing the question, "So, if you did it for church, was you doin' it for God?" Tom could feel the penetration of a very real force threatening the protective hard core shell of pride and arrogance he had carefully built around his heart. As he stared into His coffee cup fighting with the question .. he felt a battle raging within .. “I worked hard for the Church .. Shouldn’t I get some praise and honor from the pulpit?” His mind then flew to Donny, this dirty .. yet .. some kind of a ..‘prophet of the streets’ little man sittin' there beside him. Donny said ... maybe I did the right thing for the wrong reasons. If I was doing all this work for praise then what he says must be true. It was all about me and nothin' to do with God. Tom’s racing thoughts suddenly halted as they were invisibly forced back to the question.. “was you doin’ it for God?” He felt a hot flush racing up into his face as a deep sense of pain and remorse filled his breast .. he bowed his head low as he recognized the truth. He whispered a prayer as he confessed, “I was doin’ it for my own glory .. I was showboatin .. You got me God!”

Victory In Jesus

As Tom raised his head he looked deep into the eyes of young Shakira ... she was talkin’ to him: “You can come back wit your own victory from Jesus."Is it true?” Tom thought. “Aint no way I can make a come back after what I done!" Shakira was sayin’ there is nothin’ can take the victory in Jesus from me but it’s up to me to fight for it and what she said about satan’s whispers .. I got that! ... he’s been tryin to puff me up and beat me down all at the same time ever since I opened up the rage inside.” As he was weighing all of this in his head somthin' Pastor Watermelon said, a couple a weeks ago, flashed through his mind ... He was talkin' about the mercy and faithfulness of God to forgive us when we confess our sins. He had read "As far as the East is from the West, so far have I removed your sin from you." Didn't mean much last week when he was sittin' in Church thinkin' about other things, but just now it was like a curtain had been pulled back and he saw it .. like a new revelation. When does the East catch up with the West ... NEVER!!!  His heart beat wildly as God's word began to sink in. Somewhere in that message Pastor said He remembers your sin no more. Tom grabbed onto this new found hope. Jesus will forgive me and He will give me victory and yes ... it's worth fightin for!”

What’s she sayin’ now? “Walk up to that altar. Know what? That bench you be sittin' on is the altar. We can get your victory right here. My dad says it don't gotta be no church building."

AMAZING GRACE

Tom was compelled, as if by force, to his knees ... and as he went down he reached up for God's mercy. Donny and Cut were down too; bowin' down right beside him. Next thing ya know Pastor Watermelon and John were on the scene.

There on the streets with a crowd gatherin' the hand of God reached down to His creation. As Tom was bein’ prayed over he heard the Holy Spirit whisper, “Aint none too good, too poor, too bad for God to reach or ta forgive …. Don’t ever forget it boy!” Tom knew, just as surely and as firmly as he knew his own name that he would NEVER forget it.

Myrtle Marie was one of many alert and curious bystanders who crowded around. She sat there clinging to her cane, hungrily studying the scenario playing out before her. She knew this bench and this spot well and as she watched the slick suited man crumble to his knees, a still small voice spoke to her ... "Do you remember?"... as she sensed the voice, a very clear picture of her past flashed before her. It was a day long ago ... she was a young girl ... she too had been lost but the same Amazing Grace, Shakira spoke of, had found her. In fact it was at this very same park bench .. at this alter in the park ... that she too had bowed down to receive Jesus as her Lord and Savior.

Somewhere along the way she got side-tracked. Now as she watched these three .. bowed before the alter in the park ..her heart was crushed with a realization of what she had lost. She had allowed the burdens, chaos and complications of her life to take precedence over her faith. She had taken her eyes off Jesus and been pulled down by the hardships. In effect ... she had given up on Jesus; She was the one who had walked away from Amazing Grace. Now she saw it clearly.

As an onlooker, she relived what God had done for her on a day so many years ago. He had forgiven her of many heavy sins and had lifted her to a new life. How could she have walked away? Could God forgive her? Just then she heard Shakira proclaim "You can come back wit your own victory from Jesus." "Thank You Jesus ... never again will I walk away ... Glory to God on High whispered Myrtle through the tears .... next thing she knew she was standing up raising her hands to the Heavens .... with a smile of victory shining all across her withered old face. Myrtle Marie could be heard above the clammer of the crowd loudly proclaiming .... Amazing Grace ... I surrender ALL!

It was through host Whisperer 77 that I became acquainted with Mekenzie and thus began the beginnings of the realization of a vision. I picture it as taking the first steps on a bridge engulfed in fog. We must depend on the Lord to guide us.

Hi Dave, Yes, I agree with you, swollowing pride is a tough one .. but recognition and confession of pride is vital to our growth in Jesus. Here's the cool thing .. when Jesus targets it .. and we get a glimpse of the roadblock it is in our lives and how it hinders us in our walk with Him .. with our spiritual eyes opened .. we run to grab it's ugliness and surrender it to him .. once done we obtain FREEDOM .. find forgiveness, pride is wiped away and we are therefore more pliable and usable in the Master's hand.

God is doing a work here in this story and it is exciting to see it unfold.

As believers, each of us are in process of surrendering the old man and allowing the potter to do what only HE can do .. get us fit for Heaven and useful here on earth.

Thanks for stopping by to share your thoughts brother Dave.

Blessings to you!

I'm so glad to see that Tom, learned that valuable lesson about those he'd look down upon in the past, and finally swallowed his pride. I know how difficult that pill is to swallow.

Brother Dave.

Hi...thank you for the follow...

I feel the touch of the revival of the spectators...as a Christian I sometimes think that nothing I say or do ever helps as people keep on rejecting Jesus...but then...when God sees I think like that again...He orchestrates some event to happen and some person will suddenly out of the blue say something that happened a year or even more ago...about something I said or done...then I find myself astonished at how a seed was indeed planted, that I never knew, but God knew...this happens a lot...then I'm reminded of the scripture where God says that I will not waste my strength on nothing...and that His Word will not return empty to Him...absolutely great hub and wonderful reminder that our actions and life does count for something in view of the onlookers...many blessings to you... :)

I am so happy the Lord helped clear your mind. The work you are doing with Unchained Grace is awesome. What a neat idea and it's really awesome how it's going, may The King of Kings continue to pour out His power and Blessing so richly upon you and Unchained Grace and crush any opposition that intends any derailing or delay of this fine work. :)

WOW! The Holy Ghost spoke to you and then some. Right in the middle of personal tribulations and battles. It was this Hub the enemy didn't want published. He wants us cowering and wringing our hands over our past and by no means does he want us reaching for our full armor and sword of the spirit.

Mekenzie, others would've caved in. They would've ceased to praise His name in the face of the adversity. You? Not. You didn't allow your victory to be corrupt. Because of your strength, wisdom and discernment, this Hub was published.

A Hub which is inherently rich in prophesy. Yes, you can come back. Myrtle Marie came back.

I see the hand of God heavily working in not just Tom but in Donny, Robby and Shakira. It was a lesson for John as well. Who knows how God impacted the spectators gathered for that impromptu revival. The Lord is speaking to me already. The vision is forming even as I type this comment. Joyzie's statements and comments were what God told me they'd be. Where two or more are gathered. . . .

Excellent Chapter 10! Amazingly--everyone of these people have been touched by the Holy Spirit in one way or another. Sometimes the Holy Spirit will touch us and plant seeds and if we are not where we 'should' be in our lives-the words that are whispered or sometimes yelled at us will not be heard--but this never means that the seed is not there-planted within us-waiting to bloom into a beautiful flower!

I love everyone of these characters! Tom had seeds planted within him that did not immediately bloom but only because he was too arrogant and praising himself and doing these things for himself! Who's fault was it?Not Gods fault-God was trying desperately to reach Tom desperately--though his words and deeds sounded great, as well as his expensive suit-he was doing nothing but showboating-so in essence it wasn't really about God at all. Regardless of how "Tom" sold it to others.

Does this mean that the Holy Spirit's seeds of enlightenment passed him by? Nooooooooo. Everyone is worthy of God's love and forgiveness but ONLY if they recognize their error and ask for forgiveness. The seeds of the Holy Spirit were within Tom-and it was him that kept himself from seeing the truth--from seeing God and truth about himself! Eventually he let God in--and the Holy Spirit really filled him! Awesome! I love Tom now-one that I was not digging long back in the other chapters! Why? Because he was flapping his mouth and fake but now that he 'sees' with the right eyes--just love the guy!

Sometimes God will fill your shoes with the very 'same' thing you do to others--to teach you a lesson! If you don't get the lesson-who really is at fault?

“Aint none too good, too poor, too bad for God to reach or ta forgive …. Don’t ever forget it boy!” SO TRUE!

EVERYONE IS WORTHY OF GOD's love--even within their 'conditions.' We should never look at anyone, especially the poor and broken spirited in this world and think that they are not important to God. The 'outside' never usually matches the 'inside' of one's heart--a lesson in itself. The best lessons I have learned have been when I have had nothing-lost everything that is important-the seeds bloomed real good for me that way! lol

So true-it is giving up on Jesus-though Jesus never gives up on us. Are we willing to open our eyes? or will we shut them and be like Tom used to be? That is our option-free will--we have noone to blame but ourselves if we give up on Jesus.

I feel like Myrtle--maybe look like her today also. he he he. Long roads-crazy ups and downs-satan's attacks but nothing was missed--seeds were planted so long ago-I refused to see them for what they were. They have since taken bloom-long time coming but at least they arrived. I have my hands up in praise because I do know that everyone is worthy of God's love, regardless of sin, as long as it is recognized and repented--it is gone--"As far as the East is to the West-one scarred hand to the other..."

Hub on a hub--sorry :)
