Structure - Goals - Schedule

Stay at home moms are most often home by choice. They have made a conscious choice to raise their own children.

As noble as this aspiration sounds, the daily grind of being at home with the children may cause moms to lose focus and/or fall into boredom.

Setting up a system of organization, structure, goals, and schedules will empower mom's and give them a sense of accomplishment. It will also provide their children with a sense of security. Kids NEED structure!

Calendar Planning

You can Structure your personal errands, housework, activities, appointments and more with the help of a calendar.

You can make your own calendar or purchase a beautiful and useful Calendar for display. When you purchase or create your calendar make sure it has large boxes for the day so you have plenty of room to write.

To begin calendar planning

  • Write out all of the things you must do on a piece of paper.
  • Take each item and place it on your calendar for the month.
  • Make sure to add family birthdays and anniversaries too.

Structuring your schedule and ‘to do’ list will de-clutter your brain and bring a sense of order and purpose to your day.

The calendar I use is a Lang Calendar. I also display it on the wall in a Lang Calender wood frame. It's a beautiful addition to the artwork in my home. One year I chose a theme of children. The pictures are so beautiful and I didn't want to throw them away. So, at the end of the year, I decided to frame them and display them in the playroom. They are perfect!

Chore Chart

As a stay-at-home mom, you have the opportunity to set goals for your child and make it happen.

Responsibility is a character quality that will benefit your child for the rest of their life.

One important method of building personal responsibility, in your child's life, is to give them chores. Make them age appropriate and help them to be responsible to complete them. It is your job Mom, no one can do it better than you.

I suggest developing a chore chart which lists the chores each child is responsible for.

Getting Ready for your Chore Chart:

  • Plan a time to sit down with your children to list chores together.
  • Ask for your kids' input, this will make them feel part of the process.
  • When your chart is finished, display it in a place the child can easily reach. Allow them to check off each chore as completed.

The chart will be a stress reliever for you and a motivational tool for the kids. When a chart is utilized

  • You won't need to nag your children.
  • They will be using their own initiative.
  • They will feel a sense of accomplishment with the completion of each task.

It's a perfect way to teach your child about personal responsibility.

Take Care of Yourself

As you work with and focus on your children, don't forget to take care of yourself. When a mom's personal needs are met, she is better equipped to care for, direct and nurture her family.

Make sure you take time with your friends. Take time for special dates with your husband. Pamper yourself with things that bring you pleasure. Do the things that you have always enjoyed.

Develop your own talents and abilities. Do you have future goals? One day the children will be grown and on their own. It is important that you have an ongoing list of goals to develop your God-given gifts and abilities.

Do you play the piano? Practice piano and you will set an example for your children. Are you a writer? Squeeze a period of time each day to develop your skills. Share your writing with your children. They will learn to appreciate their mom's unique gifts and abilities.

Learn new skills or further your education. Consider taking one college class a semester. As the children watch your quest in developing yourself they will naturally catch the vision of becoming all they were meant to be.

Staying at home will bring great rewards as you take the time to map out your journey and implement your plan.

The Role of a Father

I don't want to leave Dad's out in this writing. The role of a Father cannot be replaced by anyone. There are attributes that only a Father can build into their child. If you are raising your child alone, you need all the support you can get and you need to be in tune with a child's needs.

All Parent's have the responsibility to train up a child according to their bent. "Train up a child in the way he should go; even when he is old, he will not depart from it." Proverbs 22:6

Study your child and direct them into programs that will develop their gifts and abilities. Teach them to be responsible and disciplined it, is for their own good. As you invest in your child they become recipients of a life molded by intentional parenting.

Make sure there are appropriate consequences for lack of follow through. "Discipline your son, and he will give you rest; he will give delight to your heart." Proverbs 29:7

As a Dad, God knows of your tendency to be too harsh. Here's a warning from your Father, the one who knows you through and through.

"Fathers, do not provoke your children to anger, but bring them up in the discipline and instruction of the Lord." Ephesians 6:4

Here is another:

"Fathers, do not provoke your children, lest they become discouraged." Col. 3:21

I hope this article will motivate you to begin today to be all that God intended you to be as a parent.

Pass these tips and habits on to your children and you will be blessed to see them living a life of character and responsibility.

Those of you who read my hubs know that I am a believer in God. He is in pursuit of His children. His provision of salvation is through Jesus.
